Historic Investment in Our Cultural Heritage
Great news! Congress has passed the Great American Outdoors Act to provide the single largest federal investment in preservation of historic and cultural resources for public lands in our generation and ensure many of America’s most iconic historic places are saved for generations to come. Over 850 preservation, business, outdoor, tourism, conservation, recreation and hunting groups signed on to a letter to Congress urging the passage of this act.
This landmark legislation will invest up to $9.5 billion to repair historic and other assets of the National Park Service and other federal agencies. It will also fully fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) at $900 million annually. This sustained investment will ensure that our public lands can continue to expand and tell fuller American stories while also providing greater access to our shared cultural and natural heritage.
The Senate passed this bipartisan bill on June 17, 2020 by a vote of 73-25. And on July 22, 2020 the House passed the bill by a vote of 310-107, sending the bill to the President to be signed into law.
