Route 66 is the most culturally celebrated and internationally recognized stretch of highway in America, and it must be preserved for generations to come. As Route 66 prepares to enter its second century in 2026, we have an opportunity to recognize its diverse heritage through important sites such as the Threatt Filling Station and Family Farm, a Black-owned service station, bar, and outdoor stage in Luther, Oklahoma. The filling station was likely the only Black-owned and -operated gas station along Route 66 during the Jim Crow era, making it a haven for Black travelers. The farm also reportedly provided refuge to Black Americans displaced by the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. Join the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Route 66 Road Ahead Partnership, and dozens of statewide and local organizations in calling for a National Historic Trail designation for Route 66. This permanent designation will bring greater public interest and investment to the communities along the iconic highway, encourage their economic revitalization, and offer new opportunities to tell the full story of Route 66.
