Support Historic Investment in Our Cultural Heritage
The National Park System tells the story of remarkable people and events in our nation's rich history at sites as diverse as Gettysburg National Military Park, Independence Hall, the Statue of Liberty, the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park, and Native American cultural sites like Mesa Verde National Park.
The National Park Service (NPS) stewards incredible landscapes and historic sites throughout over 430 park units, however the NPS faces a challenge in adequately maintaining its sites to ensure that visitors can experience the parks' natural beauty and learn about our nation's history.
The Women’s Rights National Historical Park connects the story of women’s rights and demand for equality to the ongoing, multi-generational fight for civil rights, human rights, and economic justice for all, and is one of fewer than 15 NPS units created in recognition of women’s history and achievement. However, insufficient funding for NPS deferred maintenance programs has resulted in the deterioration of multiple historic structures within the park, and as of 2025, the park is facing over $10 million in repairs. Congress has an opportunity to enact legislation that would help address these and other repair needs at sites across the National Park System.
The Women’s Rights National Historical Park has been included on the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s 2026 list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places.
On May 2, 2025, a bipartisan group of Senators introduced the America the Beautiful Act (S.1547), which would extend the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA) National Parks and Public Land Legacy Restoration Fund (LRF) at $2 billion per year for eight years.
Signed into law by President Trump in 2020, the GAOA established the LRF with an investment of $1.9 billion per year over 5 years to address the deferred maintenance backlog of public land agencies including for the NPS. Despite the historic investment in our national parks and public lands, many projects were unable to be addressed by the five-year fund and the NPS maintenance backlog remains at over $23 billion.
The America the Beautiful Act, introduced by Senators Daines (R-MT) and Angus King (I-ME) and other bipartisan Senate cosponsors—among other things—extends the LRF at $2 billion annually for 8 years, improves opportunities for prioritizing projects with matching funds, and requires additional reporting to Congress.
Congress needs to hear from you. Please use this form to send a letter to your Senators asking that they cosponsor and support S. 1547.
